Program Overview

About this program

Doctoral study in Biblical Preaching is for experienced preachers who now train others. Preaching is a craft that can be taught and a discipline that has to be sustained for decades. The ICAS-accredited program at Kingdom of Life University covers the theology of proclamation, the route from text to sermon, the demands each genre makes, delivery as a physical act, and the honest evaluation most preachers never get.

Competency-Based Ministry Assessment

Recognition of demonstrated learning in theology and ministry

Experienced ministry practitioners demonstrate competencies developed through years of service, theological study, and continuing learning. The assessment connects that learning with the published outcomes of the Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Preaching through biblical understanding, theological reflection, research, and ministry judgment.

Major Subject Areas

The fourteen subjects you study, and the ones the ministry assessment draws on

Foundational and Major-Core Subjects

Four foundations every pathway shares, then four that belong to this field.

HOMI 7013 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Biblical Interpretation

Exegesis as the preacher does it: enough depth to be honest, inside the time a week actually allows, without the shortcuts becoming habits.

HOMI 7023 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Old Testament Theology

Preaching the Old Testament — narrative that will not state its point, law addressed to someone else, prophets who are not predicting your decade.

HOMI 7033 credits

Doctoral Seminar: New Testament Theology

Preaching the New Testament, where the unit is usually an argument and following it is most of the homiletical work.

HOMI 7043 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Christian Doctrine

The doctrine behind the pulpit: what preaching is claimed to be and do, and what the preacher may legitimately expect of a sermon.

HOMI 7053 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Theology of Preaching

Why preaching at all: the theological claims made for proclamation, the doctrine of the word, and the expectation a preacher may and may not have of a sermon.

HOMI 7063 credits

Doctoral Seminar: From Text to Sermon

The route from an exegetical outline to a sermon, including the central claim, the hearer's question, and the decisions that cannot be postponed.

HOMI 7073 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Sermon Structure and Movement

How a sermon moves. Deductive and inductive forms, narrative shape, tension and resolution, and the difference structure makes to what is heard.

HOMI 7083 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Preaching Across Genres

Preaching narrative, law, poetry, prophecy, epistle, and apocalyptic, with the specific homiletical demands each genre places on the preacher.

Specialization Subjects

Six more that take the field into the places it actually gets used.

HOMI 8013 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Illustration and Application

Illustration that clarifies rather than decorates, and application that is concrete without being moralistic or manipulative.

HOMI 8023 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Voice, Delivery, and Presence

The physical act of preaching: breath, pace, eye contact, gesture, manuscript or notes, and the recovery of presence when it goes wrong.

HOMI 8033 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Preaching in Context

Preaching to this congregation: age, culture, language, suffering, and setting, and the exegesis of a people that runs alongside exegesis of a text.

HOMI 8043 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Evaluating and Growing as a Preacher

Receiving and using feedback, self-assessment, recording review, and the long habits by which preachers improve rather than plateau.

HOMI 8053 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Spiritual Formation and Christian Vocation

Staying a reader and a Christian while preaching weekly, and the vocational hazards — staleness, borrowed material, performance — that come with the work.

HOMI 8063 credits

Doctoral Seminar: Integrative Theology and Ministry

A preaching project: a series designed, preached, evaluated with listener evidence, and written up with the reasoning at each stage.
