Program Overview
About this program
The B.A. in Frontline Ministry prepares you for spiritual care inside institutions that are not the church. A chaplain works inside somebody else's institution, under its rules, for people of any faith or none. This ICAS-accredited Kingdom of Life University program covers healthcare and hospice, military and emergency services, workplace and campus, crisis response, and the ethics of a post where pastoral duty and employer expectation do not always align.
Competency-Based Ministry Assessment
Recognition of demonstrated learning in theology and ministry
Experienced ministry practitioners demonstrate competencies developed through years of service, theological study, and continuing learning. The assessment connects that learning with the published outcomes of the Bachelor of Arts in Frontline Ministry through biblical understanding, theological reflection, research, and ministry judgment.

Major Subject Areas
The fourteen subjects you study, and the ones the ministry assessment draws on
Foundational and Major-Core Subjects
Four foundations every pathway shares, then four that belong to this field.
Biblical Interpretation
Using Scripture with people who may not accept it, including when not to, and the difference between offering a text and imposing one.
Old Testament Theology
The Old Testament's resources for institutional ministry: exile, displacement, and faith practised where you are not in charge.
New Testament Theology
The New Testament on presence, service and the stranger, read as the theological ground of a ministry conducted among people who did not ask for it.
Christian Doctrine
Doctrine for a chaplain: what you actually believe about suffering, dying and God's presence, since you will be asked at three in the morning.
Foundations of Chaplaincy
Chaplaincy as a distinct ministry: its history, its accountability to two institutions at once, and the identity questions of serving where the church is a guest.
Healthcare Chaplaincy
Hospital and hospice practice, covering ward rounds, the clinical team, spiritual assessment, ritual at the bedside, and care for staff as well as patients.
Military and First Responder Chaplaincy
Ministry with armed forces and emergency services, including operational deployment, moral injury, unit culture, and confidentiality within a command structure.
Workplace and Campus Chaplaincy
Chaplaincy in workplaces and on campuses, where attendance is voluntary, presence is the method, and the ministry has to earn its place repeatedly.
Specialization Subjects
Six more that take the field into the places it actually gets used.
Crisis and Trauma Response
Immediate response to critical incidents, including psychological first aid, defusing, the evidence on debriefing, and the chaplain's role in the first hours.
Ethics and Confidentiality
Professional ethics in institutional settings: informed consent, documentation, confidentiality against institutional demand, and proselytism boundaries.
Ministry in Plural Settings
Spiritual care for people of any faith or none, providing for their tradition rather than yours, without concealing your own.
Interdisciplinary Team Practice
Working inside a multidisciplinary team, contributing to case discussion, and making the spiritual dimension intelligible to clinical colleagues.
Spiritual Formation and Christian Vocation
Moral injury, resilience and the spiritual life of someone who absorbs other people's worst days as a job.
Integrative Theology and Ministry
A chaplaincy project in an institutional setting, with ethics approval, evaluation, and a written account of the practice.
